Sourcing & Procurement Recruitment

Around 10,000 procurement roles are advertised across the UK at any one time, yet the strongest buyers are often never among them.

Effective procurement and sourcing is what separates a resilient supply chain from a fragile one. When your supplier relationships are strong, your costs are controlled, your ethical standards are upheld and your supply is reliable, everything else in the chain runs more smoothly. When procurement underperforms, the ripple effect is felt everywhere: inflated costs, unreliable supply, and in today’s retail environment, real reputational risk from poor supplier practices. Finding the right procurement professional isn’t just a hiring decision, it’s a strategic one.

As a specialist procurement recruitment agency and sourcing recruitment agency, we’re here to support you through every step of the process. Whether you’re a procurement director, supply chain leader, or HR specialist running the search, we’ve got you covered. From benchmarking and job specification creation, to shortlists, presentation strategy, offer management, and ongoing support after hire, we make sure the vacancy isn’t just filled, you’re supported long term.

Procurement and sourcing roles are some of the most commercially complex in any supply chain. Every business sources differently, and success depends on far more than negotiation skill or supplier relationships. It’s about understanding total cost of ownership, managing supplier risk, ensuring ethical and sustainable sourcing practices, and finding someone who can balance commercial rigour with long-term strategic thinking. Whether you’re hiring a Buyer, Sourcing Manager, Procurement Manager, Head of Buying, Head of Procurement, or Procurement Director, our approach as a specialist procurement recruiter, sourcing recruiter and buying recruiter delivers candidates who understand both the commercial detail and the strategic impact behind it.

Case Study

Head of Procurement

Garden Retail (B2B2C)

They were appointed within eight weeks and have since overhauled the company's supplier compliance framework, bringing it fully in line with the requirements of their major retail partners.

Working with a business that designs and sells both technical and standard garden products through major garden retail and DIY channels across the UK, the company faced a significant challenge when their long-standing Head of Procurement announced their departure. This individual had built the supplier base over many years, managing a complex mix of manufacturers across the Far East, ranging from technically demanding product categories requiring close factory oversight through to more standard commodity lines. Their knowledge of the supply base was deep and largely undocumented, and the board were clear that finding a direct replacement with equivalent experience was the priority.

The business had run their own search and interviewed several candidates with Far East sourcing experience on paper. However, when the interviews went deeper, a pattern emerged. While most candidates could demonstrate experience placing orders and managing supplier relationships at a transactional level, very few had genuinely robust experience managing ethical compliance across a Far East factory base. For a business selling through retail channels that increasingly demanded ethical sourcing accreditation and supply chain transparency, this wasn’t a nice-to-have. It was essential. After several near misses at final stage, the business approached us.

Rather than simply broadening the search, we focused on what had actually been missing from every previous shortlist: genuine depth in supplier ethical compliance and factory standards management, not just familiarity with the concept. We built a candidate profile around businesses known for rigorous ethical sourcing standards, not necessarily in garden or outdoor products, but in any sector where premium positioning and retail reputation made supply chain ethics genuinely business-critical.

This led us to a senior procurement professional working in the premium clothing sector. A different product category entirely, but a company widely recognised for the depth and rigour of its ethical sourcing programme across a similar Far East factory base. Their experience managing factory audits, working with accreditation bodies and building supplier development programmes directly addressed the gap the previous candidates had all shared. The client was initially uncertain about the sector switch, but after meeting the candidate it became clear that the procurement experience, supplier management discipline and ethical sourcing credentials were exactly what they needed. They were appointed within eight weeks and have since overhauled the company’s supplier compliance framework, bringing it fully in line with the requirements of their major retail partners.

Procurement recruitment FAQs

Clear answers on recruiting procurement specialists, assessing commercial capability and finding experience that fits your sector.

What are the biggest challenges when recruiting in procurement and sourcing?

The most consistent challenge we see in buying and procurement recruitment is the difference between sector experience and procurement style, and knowing which one actually matters more for a given role. Businesses often default to looking for candidates from an identical or closely related sector, when in reality the procurement approach, the rigour around supplier management, ethical sourcing standards and category thinking, can transfer across sectors far more effectively than people expect. Our garden retail case study above is a good example: the appointed candidate came from clothing, not garden products, but their procurement discipline was exactly what the business needed. Getting that balance right, knowing when sector knowledge is essential and when procurement capability should take precedence, is one of the things that separates a specialist procurement recruiter from a generalist one.

How does recruiting at senior procurement level differ from mid-level?

Significantly, and in ways that aren’t always obvious from a CV alone. At mid-level, a Procurement Manager or Sourcing Manager search is largely about verifiable experience: category knowledge, supplier base, systems, and track record of delivery. At senior level, a Head of Procurement or Procurement Director appointment is much more about strategic thinking, leadership style, stakeholder influence and cultural fit within the business. The CV becomes less useful as the primary filter, and the process becomes more dependent on deeper, more structured conversations, longer interview stages and a more careful assessment of how someone thinks, not just what they’ve done. As a specialist procurement recruitment agency, we adjust our approach accordingly, leaning more heavily on our own insight and assessment at senior level rather than treating the shortlist as a stack of comparable CVs.

Which industries do you source procurement and buying candidates from?

Procurement and sourcing expertise travels well across sectors, and our buying recruitment and sourcing recruitment work spans a wide range of industries including FMCG, Retail, Garden and Outdoor, Manufacturing, Pharmaceuticals, Agroscience, Technology and Logistics. Where sector knowledge is critical we focus our search accordingly, but where procurement discipline and supplier management rigour are the priority, we’ll look further afield if that’s where the strongest candidates sit. That flexibility, and the judgement to know when to apply it, is part of what makes our approach different.

What changes are you noticing in procurement recruitment right now?

Ethical sourcing and supply chain transparency have moved from differentiators to baseline expectations, particularly for businesses selling through major retail channels. We’re seeing more briefs where supplier compliance, ESG credentials and factory standards management are listed as core requirements rather than desirable extras. At the same time, businesses are increasingly looking for procurement professionals who can operate strategically as well as operationally, people who can hold their own in a boardroom conversation about supply chain risk, not just manage a supplier list. That shift is raising the bar on what a strong procurement or sourcing hire looks like, and it’s making specialist buying recruitment and procurement recruitment more important than ever.

I've never recruited a procurement or sourcing role before, where do I start?

Start by being clear about what the role actually needs to achieve, not just what the previous person did. Procurement and buying roles can look similar on a job spec but vary enormously depending on your supply base, product complexity, ethical sourcing obligations and whether you need a transactional operator or a strategic leader. As a specialist procurement and sourcing recruitment agency, we’ll talk through exactly what your business needs, help you build a realistic job specification and salary benchmark, and guide you through the process from there. You don’t need to have it all worked out before you speak to us, that’s what we’re here for.

What areas do you cover for procurement and sourcing recruitment?

We focus on procurement recruitment and sourcing recruitment across the South of the UK, including London, Guildford, Reading, Southampton, Portsmouth and Basingstoke, and we’re also regularly trusted with international procurement hires for businesses managing cross-border supply bases. Wherever the role is based, our approach stays the same: proactive sourcing, genuine sector understanding, and a process built around finding the right fit rather than the first available candidate.
